Ruben Amber's "Color Therapy" explains that color is a vibration that is constantly affecting us in our daily lives. This book enumerates the myriad ways we can choose to consciously use color to influence our body, mind and soul to promote balanced health and well-being.
PART 1 on the theory and philosophy of Chromotherapy begins with an historical survey of mythology from different parts of the world, drawing on Ayurvedic lore.
The views of modern physics, radionics and researchers including Burr, De La Warr, Reich and Steiner are presented.
PART 2 gives specific applications of color in our environment, with our food, clothing and light sensitizing us to the healing power or the destructive effects of a guided use of color therapy.
A unique feature is the inclusion of an extensive repertory listing the relationship of color, taste, polarity, organs, elements and diseases to foster a holistic use of these techniques. This book is valuable not only for healing already existing imbalances, but ideally, to help us become more aware of how color can create a positive balance within ourselves and impact our environment.

Calvert Mutual Funds History
By John Guffey & Rebecca Adamson
1967 Wayne Silby & John Guffey meet at University of Pennsylvania Wharton School. During college they discuss creating an investment company.
1970 Wayne & John graduate from U of Pa.
Wayne goes to Georgetown U. Law School
John goes into the US Army
1972 John does post graduate work at Penn State U.
1975 Wayne graduates from Georgetown Law school and starts Bankers Trend, a firm to broker guaranteed portion of SBA loans between banks and institutional investors.
Wayne & John reconnect and begin discussions on starting a mutual fund.
1976 John takes a job with the Department of Labor and moves to DC to work with Wayne on creating a mutual fund. They create a partnership, Government Securities Management Co. (GSMC), to act as advisor to the fund.
Wayne & John decide to start a money market fund, First Variable Rate Fund for Government Investors or FVRF, using the government guaranteed portion of variable rate SBA loans as part of its portfolio to get a higher yield than other money market funds. This is first use of variable rate securities in a money market fund. They hire the first employee, Pam Van Arsdale. She goes on to become one of the first female mutual fund managers.
Wayne sublets office space in a law firm at 1700 Pennsylvania Ave. to obtain a prestigious address.
Wayne continues work on Banks Trend. John goes to the FVRF office after work at DOL and both work on registration materials for the new fund with the SEC and the states. All legal work is done by Wayne and John. A law school classmate of Wayne’s has joined a Washington law firm and that firm agrees to be listed as legal counsel to the Fund. Family money provides the initial $100,000 needed to launch fund.
December 7, 1976, First Variable Rate Fund for Government Investors is declared available for sale by the SEC and states. Bank of New York acts as its first custodian and transfer agent. Small NY accounting firm acts as auditor. It ends the year with $102,000 in net assets.
The first shareholders’ meeting of First Variable takes place at Wayne’s parent’s home in Mason City, IA. in December 1976. All shareholders are represented in person or by proxy. Wayne presides and acts as secretary. He recorded, “The shareholders voted to get the show on the road.” Several years later we had to hire the most prestigious law firm in Maryland to opine that this constituted authorization to issue shares and conduct business.
1977 Fund sales are slow despite having the highest yield of any money fund. Wayne manages portfolio and tries to market fund. John continues at DOL and helps on the fund in the evenings. John handles accounting and administration. Fund ends the year with $6.8 million in assets, too small to be viable. John goes part time at DOL to give more time to the effort.
1978 Fund gets some favorable media and sales pick up. We do the first mutual fund interest rate ad in contravention of SEC rules. SEC takes notice. Wayne Bardsley joins firm as general counsel to deal with SEC issues. SEC changes its rule to allow interest rate ads.
By April FVRF reaches a viable asset level. John leaves DOL to work full time on the fund. Firm hires staff to support marketing and admin work. Advisor buys 1715 18th St., NW, DC for company offices, currently Wayne’s home. Fund ends year with $46.1 million assets.
1979 After achieving the top money fund performance in 1977 & 1978, sales of the fund take off. Wayne and John are unhappy with Bank of NY service, due to errors and many shareholder complaints. They decide to take the transfer agency in house and move the custody to Riggs Bank in DC. We hire Bill Holloran to write a new TA system. Transition does not go smoothly. Bank of New York ships in great disorder, shareholder records thrown in boxes. It takes months to straighten out shareholder accounts. Many mistakes were made on shareholder accounts. By end of the year accounts are straitened out. Significant new staff hired to run TA operation. Ernst & Young was hired as auditor. Fund ends the year with $179 million in assets.
With an influx of new college grads as employees, Calvert institutes a casual dress code for employees, very different from the required business attire of the time. Now adopted by most companies as business casual.
1980 The firm out grows space at 1700 Pennsylvania and 1715 18th Street. The Advisor, GSMC, purchases the Calvert Street building, a former Indian restaurant, for its new offices. FVRF sales remained strong as short-term interest rates went to double digits. Stan Sorrell was hired from Rigs Bank to help with marketing and operations. FVRF reaches $1 billion in net assets. A large gathering was held to celebrate this milestone.
Expecting a change in bank regulation that would allow banks to pay unregulated rates on money market accounts. Money market funds had an advantage in high interest rate environments since banks were limited by regulation on how much they could pay on savings accounts. We began making plans to add more funds to meet this new competition and to diversify our offerings. FVRF did not lend itself as a firm name for other funds. The management team chose Calvert for Calvert Street and its connection to the founding family of Maryland after considering others such as Potomac, Washington, etc.
In addition to a new company name, we felt the need for a distinctive logo. Wayne suggested we use the I Ching, an ancient Chinese divination tool in which 3 coins are thrown to indicate broken or unbroken lines to receive guidance for the future. The then 6 senior managers of Calvert, John, Wayne, Wayne Bardsley, Bill Holloran, Stan Sorrell, and Ron Wolfsheimer, met on the roof deck of 1715. Each manager in turn threw the coins. Each got a straight line forming the first hexagram of the I Ching: the creative/dynamic, one of the most powerful symbols in the I Ching canon. The six lines continue to be Calvert’s logo.
1981 The first funds under the Calvert name were created. Calvert Tax Free Reserves Money Market Portfolio and Limited Term Portfolio. Dave Rochat, formerly head of fixed income at Donaldson, Lufkin, Jenrette, joined Calvert to manage the new funds. He had retired from DLJ to get out of the Wall Street grind and spend more time with family. He purchased a small farm and moved to Vermont. He opened a Calvert office over a funeral home in Chelsea, VT and supervised the management of the fund from there. The Money Market Portfolio was the top performing municipal money market fund for several years. The Limited Term Portfolio was the first short term municipal bond fund and a solid alternative to a money market fund with a higher yield and slightly higher risk. The new funds were successful and grew rapidly ending the year with $32 million in net assets.
Catherine Bardsley joins the legal department.
In 1981 an accounting clerk embezzled $1 million from the company by wiring it to a Swiss bank account. Fortunately, through the bank connections of Riggs Bank, we were able to retrieve all but $50,000. The woman and her boy friend fled to Brazil. She was never prosecuted. This created some adverse publicity and caused us to reevaluate and strengthen our controls and procedures. We also added several trustees with extensive investment experience.
Again the company outgrew its quarters on Calvert St., and 18th St., and 1700 Pa. 1700 Pa. was reduced to a walk-in office for shareholders to make purchases. In a search of the DC area, the preference was to stay in DC but nothing suitable was found, the decision was then made to consolidate the offices in the Air Rights Building in downtown Bethesda, which would remain its headquarters for the next 35 years. Bethesda was chosen over other suburban locations due to the impending arrival of Metro.
1982 FVRF and the tax free funds continued to be top performing funds in their categories.
In the late 70’s Wayne Silby attended a seminar at Another Place Farm in rural northern Massachusetts focused on the Buddhist concept of right livelihood, meaning all aspects of one’s life should reflect the person’s values and beliefs. When he returned, he and John began discussing the idea of a mutual fund that embodied the values of our generation, and thinking about how that could be done. At about the same time Wayne joined the board of a small startup company in Boston. Robert Zevin of U.S. Trust Company of Boston also served on this board. The company went was not successful. In a strange piece of karmic coincidence, as Wayne traveled to New York on business, he met Robert in the rest room at the Marine terminal at LaGuardia Airport. They shared a cab into the city. Wayne brought up the idea of a socially screened fund. Robert said that is how I manage money. Suddenly the solution to the creation of a value based fund was evident. So back in DC Wayne called Robert and began discussing the creation of a fund that US Trust would manage.
At Another Place Wayne had met several others exploring social investing, Terry Mollner, Grace LeClair, Sydney Morris, and Marc Sarkady. We were all in college in the 60’s and influenced by the social movements roiling the country in that period: civil rights, feminism, environmentalism, anti-war, and fear of nuclear war. We felt that others of our generation would want to invest with their values. The Calvert Social Investment Fund with a balanced portfolio and a money market portfolio was formed to be managed by Robert at U.S. Trust. This was the first SRI money market fund. Most of our mangers were opposed and the investment community was skeptical. While not the first social fund*, it was the first to include a comprehensive set of modern value screens.
Dr. Robert Zevin was one of the founding practitioners of social or responsible investing (SRI), starting in the 1960’s. He was an economics professor at Harvard and started investing money for friends and family. Robert had started managing money full time in the mid 60’s. He was also active in the social movements of the time. Many of his first clients were from these groups and they asked him to manage their money while avoiding objectionable companies involved in weapons manufacture, polluting industries, etc. Contrary to the belief at the time he found this did not detract from investment performance. The first set of screens for the Calvert Social Investment Fund(CSIF) was based on the work of Robert Zevin with input from Wayne, Terry Mollner, Marc Sarkady, Catherine Barsdsley and Grace LeClair. US Trust was hired as the fund’s sub-advisor. U.S.Trust provided both social research and stock selection. Calvert managed the money market portfolio.
The first trustees of the fund were Terry Mollner, Rev. Sydney Morris, Richard Baird, Wayne and John. Terry pushed the board to allow community investments at below market rates. We agreed we would look into implementing that policy when the CSIF Balanced Fund reached $100 million in assets. U.S. Trust agrees that they will implement this as part of their management.
Robert suggested an advisory group of experts to advise the Board and US Trust on the Fund’s social screens. The Advisory Council made of forward thinking experts in the fields of interest to CSIF’s investment criteria was created to advise the Board and sub-advisor on social considerations affecting the fund’s screens. Marc Sarkady was tapped by the Board to be the first Chair of the Advisory Council and to find suitable candidates for its members. Its members varied over the years but included: Randal Robinson, Robert Rodale, Amory Lovins, Hunter Lovins, Hazel Henderson, Jessica Lipnak, Jeff Stamps, Julian Bond, James Heard, Randy Barber, Robert Browne, William Bynum, Fred Davie, Marion Wright Edelman, Michael Fischer, Sophia Bracey Harris, Erica Hunt, Rustum Roy, Byron Rushing, Gail Snowdon, Tom Stonebeck, Andrea Carmen, Gary Browse, Eric Utne, and Tim Smith, who became chair in 1990. Tim resigned in 2000 to join Walden Asset Management, successor firm to U.S. Trust. Byron Rushing became chair until the Council is ended in 2005.
The Council over the years debated the appropriate CSIF position on many issues. The debates were heated at times but never devolved into personal attack. Some of the more contentious discussions were: South Africa/Apartheid, beer/alcohol, nuclear power, gambling/native casinos, Burma positioning, China, support of unions, and others.
Growth was slow in the early years as most in the financial industry were not supportive. Many believed that limiting the universe of investments violated the fiduciary rule. The SEC also raised this issue, but Catherine Bardsley went around with them many times with many tweaks to the description of the screens before convincing them that disclosure allowed investors to make an informed decision about this. Grace LeClerc was hired to head the marketing efforts for the fund. She devised a comprehensive marketing program using public relations and extensive speaking engagements to groups sympathetic to the fund’s social mission. We received much negative feedback from the investment community and conservative commenters. While the industry was skeptical, the press loved the idea, and the fund received many favorable articles which boosted sales. Now SRI or ESG investing is a major segment of the investment industry.
Calvert was one of the founding members of the Social Investment Forum, a trade association for SRI * investors, now the U S Sustainable Investment Forum or USSIF.
The company also expanded its portfolio of funds by adding non-SRI equity and income funds. To reduce the expense of creating staff to manage these new funds, we made the decision to use outside sub-advisors for these funds. The new funds struggled with performance issues. The equity fund struggled through several sub-advisors until it was merged into the Social Equity Fund, now Calvert Equity. The management of the Income Fund was brought in house in the mid-90’s and continues as the Calvert Income Fund.
This became the basic structure for Calvert equity funds going forward; Calvert would provide the social research and screening with outside sub-advisors doing the stock selection.
1983 The Calvert Tax Free Reserves Long Term Portfolio was created. It continues today as the Calvert Responsible Municipal Fund.
As expected the Federal Reserve allowed the banks to offer money market accounts with no limit on the interest rate paid. The banks began offering high temporary teaser rates to lure back deposits from money market funds. Also, the banks also had the advantage of $100,000 FDIC insurance. As most of Calvert assets were in money market funds this was a significant threat to our existence. We responded by teaming up with a group of smaller banks to offer a brokered deposit product, T-bill Extra. T-bill Extra paid an interest rate tied to the weekly treasury bill auction and allowed an investor to get insurance on up to $500,000 of deposits. It also allowed the small banks to compete for deposits with the large banks and not have to pay high rates to its current local depositors. Within 3 months of it grew to over $100 million. The product was successful in reversing the asset drain from our money market funds and gave the company about 10 years to grow its longer-term fund products.
After several situations threatening the life of the company and the stresses of managing through them and changes in their personal lives, Wayne and John decide to sell the company. Our auditor connects us with one of their other local clients, The Acacia Mutual Life Insurance Company. Acacia was a Washington institution with a hundred-year history. It sold life insurance through agents in offices around the country. The sale was completed in January 1984 with a 3 year earn out. The company had an ESOP so most of the employees received a significant payment in addition to Wayne and John. Acacia decides to leave the Calvert non-SRI fund boards in place with the addition of several trustees of their choosing for the these boards (most of Calvert Fund assets at this time were non-SRI). They are less interested in the social fund allowing the original board to chart an innovative course in the SRI field.
1984 CSIF board votes to divest South Africa holdings at Council urging; the first mutual fund to do so.
From 1984 Calvert changes from a no-load fund group to a load fund group to encourage sales through the Acacia network and broker-dealers. The company continued to grow.
1984 Calvert creates Money Management Plus Funds as money market funds to serve the broker/advisor market.
1985 Calvert Securities, a discount broker, is formed to service Calvert clients. It never achieves profitable scale. It became the Advisers Group to offer brokerage services to Acacia agents and financial planners. It is now Ameritas Securites servicing Ameritas agents and clients.
Bill Holoran leaves the company to become head of IT for Dreyfus Mutual funds.
Washington Area Growth Fund was created to invest in local companies managed by the Acacia equities group. It continued until 1991 and was liquidated after a major economic downturn in the Washington area devastated performance.
As the earn out ends Wayne decides to leave the company to travel and pursue other business interests. Wayne stays president of CSIF and joins the Acacia Mutual board. John becomes sole CEO of Calvert.

1987 CSIF Bond and Equity funds are introduced, both managed by U. S. Trust.
Acacia wants the company to be managed in a more traditional way. They did not like the more casual style that was part of Calvert culture, which included a casual dress code, now adopted by most corporations as business casual. They were also concerned about CSIF’s shareholder activism and sponsoring shareholder resolutions as they were receiving negative feedback from the business community on these efforts. They were not comfortable with CSIF taking controversial political positions, Wayne and Catherine Bardsley leave the company. Steve Top becomes Calvert general counsel. After continuing conflict with the Acacia CEO, John decides to leave the company. Catherine Bardsley is retained as the counsel for the CSIF fund. John remains on the mutual fund boards. Acacia appoints Stan Sorrell the president of Calvert.
1988 U. S. Trust makes 2 small investments in low-income housing projects. Both run into trouble. UST decides it is too costly to provide this type of investment for the fee it receives. Calvert management also feels this type of investing is outside their expertise and too costly. The Board decides to implement a trial program and makes several small investments in community loan funds. We decide to call this our High Social Impact Investment portfolio(HSII). Impact investing is now the accepted term for community development and other investments made with a primary social purpose as well as a financial goal.

Joy Jones joins the CSIF board making it the most diverse in the mutual fund industry.
Wayne and John join with John May to form Silby Guffey LLC, an advisor to Calvert Social Ventures Partners LP, a new private venture capital fund investing in companies creating cutting edge technologies in the fields of environment, education, and health care. One of the first venture funds employing ESG/SRI policies in the investment process. In the early 90’s Silby Guffey is one of the founding members of the Emerging Europe Fund LLC, a venture fund investing in the newly free countries of central Europe. John May goes on to form several venture funds investing in women created companies and is a founder of the “angel investor” movement, which forms investment clubs in various cities to invest in start-up businesses to promote economic development.
1990 Calvert Foundation issues its study on the effects of military spending on the US economy. The release generates several media articles. The Soviet Union collapses, and the US reduces military expenditures. The Foundation goes dormant for several years until the board decides to create a loan fund to invest in community development organizations.
Tuck Nason, new Acacia CEO, joins the CSIF Board.
Calvert hires Jon Lickerman to form a social research group reducing its dependence on U. S. Trust.
CSIF shareholders meeting in DC overwhelmingly approves investing up to 1% of assets in the high impact program. Several shareholders push for more with general agreement by others present.
The enthusiastic response of the CSIF shareholders causes the CSIF board to begin researching the possibility of creating a pure high impact investment vehicle available to all investors.
Calvert files a shareholder proposal at ARCO requesting the board do more to prevent spills from the pipeline at its annual shareholders’ meeting in response to the Exxon Valdez oil spill. Wayne Silby speaks at the meeting. ARCO is the major operator of the Alaska oil pipeline. The ARCO president invites Wayne to tour its Alaska operations and safety policies. Wayne and Marc Sarkady tour its facilities and report to the Board and Council.

1992-3 Under Dave Rochat’s leadership Calvert has one of the best performing municipal bond management groups in the industry. After years of strong municipal performance Calvert creates an intermediate tax-free fund and single state municipal bond funds for Maryland, Virginia, Arizona, Florida, California, Michigan, New York, and Pennsylvania, all later dropped due to weak sales.

The fund posts disappointing returns for several years and is discontinued.

Calvert creates the Calvert New Africa Fund, the first Africa centric mutual fund. The fund is sub-advised by NCM Capital Management.
1995 After a study of legal structures and a survey of fund shareholders, the Foundation board makes the decision to become a community loan fund to be offered to retail investors. This becomes the first national security in impact investing available to the general public. Rebecca Adamson, based on her experience starting the first US micro loan fund, takes the lead in writing a proposal to the Ford Foundation, Mott Foundation, and MacArthur Foundation to provide initial funding and subordinate debt to launch the fund. Calvert legal registers the Community Notes in all states for sale. Notes would be sold directly and through brokers to individual investors willing to accept a below market interest rate to support community impact. Loans would then be made to community development organizations that would not qualify for funds from the capital markets and at below market rates.
Kathy Keeley is hired by Terry and John to run the Calvert Foundation and begin receiving the HSII investments. Calvert Trustees restructure the Foundation Board: Rick, Sydney and Joy step off the Foundation Board for more independence for the Foundation from CSIF. Terry, Wayne, John and Rebecca with Grace Leclerc and Marc Sarkedy become the Calvert Foundation board so the HSII investments are done separately from the CSIF Board.
1996 Kathy Keeley as Foundation executive director does not work out and she is replaced by Shari Berenbach.
1996 The CSIF Board decides to designate a small portion of the fund’s portfolio to social venture capital, thinking this as a way of supporting more directly companies creating the positive social impact the fund wants to encourage. Calvert management feels it does not have the expertise to manage this type of security. The Board decides to take on the responsibility to manage this portion of the fund under Wayne’s leadership, based on his years managing Calvert Social Venture Partners. We name the program Special Equities. This one of the first mutual funds to do venture investing.

The CSIF Board then reviews the Foundation’s performance on a quarterly basis.
SEC grants an exemption to allow this. Calvert funds continue this program to this day.

ETF’s offer several advantages over traditional mutual funds for taxable investors: tax advantages, lower fees, and ability to trade. CSIF trustees encourage Barbara to create Calvert ETF’s. She feels they are a fad and only suitable for institutional traders. Calvert misses this major trend in the industry. ETF’s now outsell traditional funds.

2016 Indian tribes in South Dakota begin protesting the building of the Dakota Access Pipeline (DAPL). The pipeline threatens to pollute the tribes’ water supply. Rebecca Adamson and First Peoples Worldwide is asked to coordinate investor/shareholder efforts to oppose the pipeline by instituting shareholder actions with the companies building the pipeline and the banks funding the effort. Calvert sends representatives to South Dakota to investigate and lend support to the shareholder effort. Calvert joins in shareholder engagement on this issue.
- Ameritas sells Calvert to Eaton Vance, a large mutual fund advisor based in Boston. Struer does major reduction in force at Calvert reducing staff from about 150 to 40 by outsourcing many functions performed by Calvert staff. Calvert moves to Connecticut Ave. in the District. Calvert back office functions and fixed income management are assumed by Eaton Vance in Boston. Calvert office does social research/shareholder activism and marketing. Most Calvert equity funds are managed by EV affiliates with exception of the International Fund, formerly World Values, and the Emerging Markets Fund. Funds are sold through the Eaton Vance wholesaler network with support by Calvert ESG specialists.
Calvert funds’ several boards are reorganized and combined. Wayne Silby, Rebecca Adamson, Terry Mollner, Sydney Morris and several long time Acacia appointed board members retire. Surviving board members are: John Guffey, Richard Baird, Joy Jones, Tony Williams, Alice Bullock, Cari Dominguez, and Miles Harper.
John Struer makes major changes to fund line up. He converts the Alternative Energy and the Water funds to custom Calvert index funds. He creates a series of ESG index funds in the major asset categories. With the Eaton Vance and later Morgan Stanley sales force Calvert assets reach new highs, over $30 billion. He ends the special equities program.
March 1, 2021 Morgan Stanley buys Eaton Vance. MS makes significant changes in EV management ranks as many EV managers exercise their stock options and retire.
2022 Morgan Stanly creates Calvert ETF’s and Calvert European funds with a new Morgan Stanley appointed board.
2023 Ted Eliopolis becomes Calvert CEO as transition CEO. He makes minor changes in Calvert staffing. John Struer becomes chair of the Calvert Research board. Calvert moves to new offices in DC on M St., NW.
John Guffey and Richard Baird retire from Calvert Funds board. Eddie Ramos and Karen Fang join the board as replacements.
2024 John Struer leaves Calvert/Morgan Stanley. Von Hughes becomes Calvert CEO and joins the Calvert Funds board.
Calvert Impact Capital, formerly the Calvert Social Investment Foundation, is granted $7 billion by the EPA under the Inflation Reduction Act to support energy transitions in low income communities in the US.
*SRI, socially responsible investing, and ESG, environment, social and governance, are used interchangeably in this article. The term for using environmental and social values as well as accepted good governance practices in the investment process has changed several times over recent years, from SRI to responsible investing to ethical investing to sustainable investing to impact investing finally ESG. Social investing by religious investors has a long history dating to colonial times with Quakers avoiding investing in the slave trade. Later the sin screens of alcohol, tobacco and gambling were adopted by religious investors. Several mutual funds were created in the 1920’s to appeal to this group. This remained social investing until 1971 when Pax World Fund added anti-weapons maker screens in response to the Vietnam War. Calvert in 1982 introduced the first comprehensive set of issues for review in the investment process and including shareholder activism. There is no set definition of the values espoused by ESG investors and a wide variety of approaches are used by various companies: progressive, Catholic, Islamic, conservative, women focused, etc. DEI or diversity equity and inclusion is another recent movement promoting the inclusion of minorities and women in arts, education, government, and business.

"Taoist Secrets of Love is not just another flowery philosophical treatise on the ecstasies of oriental love. It is a pragmatic handbook that distills the secret teachings on sex of four living Taoist masters sought out by Mantak Chia during fifteen years of travel and study in the Far East. The Taoist practice of chi cultivation focuses on integrating the divine or subtle energies into the human body, with the goal of achieving a dynamic balance of opposing energies called Yin and Yang. The Tao is the indescribable sum and absolute source of these energies, which manifest in ever changing form. The Taoists, being practical, proposed that a man can begin with the most accessible energy at hand, the sexual attraction between men and women, and use that force as a springboard to more subtle realms."

DR. MICHAEL GAUGUELIN – COSMIC
INFLUENCES ON HUMAN BEHAVIOR
Cosmic Influences on Human Behavior is a work which offers scientific support for Astrology. The Planetary Factors in Personality Astrological theory implies a relation between vocation and birth horoscopes Dr. Gauquelin discovered in studying the birth of 25,000 European professionals listed in Who's Who, that certain planets were found more frequently at the rising or culminating positions in the horoscope.
For example, Mars ascended or culminated (in the case of athletes) with the probability against chance distribution ranging from; 1 in 50,000, to 1 in 1,000,000.
"Cosmic Influences on Human Behavior" - has been internationally recognized as the most important scientific support that Astrology has ever received. Dr. Gauquelin has validated the existence of a correlation between the state of the solar system and human experience. "IN THE LAST GREAT EPOCH in human history, people in the West forgot completely that it isn't enough to know the secrets of physics, mathematics, and chemistry, and that on the contrary the very first object of man's study, research and understanding should be man himself, the discoverer of all these secrets. While his attention was directed to things outside himself, he neglected to look inside and ask the question, who am I? This omission had serious consequences - while technological developments became ever more perfect, man himself became more and more imperfect. At the very time that engineering and technology were enhancing man's personal comfort, his soul was sinking deeper and deeper into dissatisfaction and misery. A person who has lost himself is plagued by burning unrest, and the result of inner dissatisfaction, tragedy within the man, is always war, destruction, cosmic catastrophe. Humanity plunges into misery for the same reason that people seek happiness outside themselves. This, instead of in the one and only place where it can be found, within! But the sufferings that often seem to grow and compound themselves finally force us to turn our attention away from things and toward the person who is suffering-ourselves! Sooner or later, we must learn that the true reason for our sufferings our abysmal lack of self-understanding and self-control. Man simply does not know his own soul and the principles and forces at work deep within it. He does not know the source of his thoughts, or the tree of his wishes. Chained dawn by this ignorance of his own being, he cannot control either himself or his destiny. In the same blind way in which he follows his animal instincts and urges, fate buffets him to and fro like a rudderless ship in a storm. On the other hand, when one has learned recognize the various levels at which life goes on within his self and learn to control himself, he is also able to control his fate. The power which guides our fate did not create man for misery, but for happiness. Only blindness pushes him into suffering."

Description by Elisabeth Haich of her painting on the cover
If we cultivate spiritual awareness and attain the universal consciousness, we will acquire mastery over the 7 natural forces which, when harnessed to pull in one direction, can carry us to the goal with incredible swiftness. The picture symbolizes this state. The figure representing the spirit is standing in the triumphal chariot. One hand is radiating the power which directs the natural forces. In the left hand is held a prayer wheel such as is used in Tibet, and which symbolizes unity with the Divine. The horses race with this figure to the goal where we achieve the perfection which Christ intimated to us in the words: "Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in Heaven is perfect."

ELISABETH HAICH – WISDOM OF THE TAROT
Elizabeth Haich, Wisdom of the Tarot relates the path to higher consciousness through the color, shape, and symbolic forms on the twenty-two Tarot cards.
with each level encountered on the journey towards the light, detailed study and meditation of each card may release internally all that is involved. These cards may be used in conjunction with the text or separately for meditation. When studied individually, a card can reveal the necessary steps that need to be taken to actualize one's potential.
Tarot cards, or symbolic representations of the truth, have always been used to help man relate not only with the mind, but internally, through the feelings invoked by the colors and forms. The nature of these cards is that they can produce a strong awakening of one's unconscious forces. They are like a spiritual mirror in which we can recognize and examine ourselves. We can then understand, that the reasons for our fate, lie within ourselves, and changes by the mere fact that we begin to react differently to everything that happens to us. These cards with the text are a valuable key to understand our present state, our past and in a deeper sense, how we create our future. Included in the book are 22 pages of five-color tarot illustrations.
"Elisabeth Haich has produced a masterly work of initiation into the secrets of life. Out of a deep understanding of being and her own intimate experience of union with her genius, she has illustrated the process by which man becomes man by his insight into the pictures of the twenty-two rungs of the ladder of divine ascent, on which each rung is an experience for the next rung in accordance with the individual's plan of life." -Dr. Ewalt Kliemke

- Abraham Joshua Heschel
ABRAHAM JOSHUA HESCHEL BIO
My father was a unique combination of a Hasidic voice of compassion and mercy, always seeing the goodness in other people, and a prophetic voice of justice, denouncing hypocrisy, self-centeredness, and indifference. My father wasn't interested in assigning blame or claiming victimhood, but as the Bible does, he showed us a vision of who we might become. His was a voice of inspiration, not argumentation, rooted in Jewish religious thought. What he once wrote of East European Jews applies to him as well; "Jewishness was not in the fruit but in the sap that stirred through the tissues of the tree, bred in the silence of the soil, it ascended to the leaves to become eloquent in the fruit."' So, too, Jewishness infused my father like the sap of a tree, and his eloquence was the fruit of his deep Jewish piety and learning.
Particularly extraordinary is the diversity of those who regarded him as their teacher, Catholics, Jews, Protestants, whites and blacks, liberals and conservatives, pious and secular, Americans, Europeans, Israelis. His life challenges our conventional expectations. Here is a rabbi whose books were praised by Pope Paul VI as helping to sustain the piety of Catholics; an Orthodox Jew with a white beard and yarmulke marching for civil rights and demonstrating against the war in Vietnam; an immigrant from Poland whose work is included in anthologies of exceptional English prose.
My father described himself as a "brand plucked from the fire of Europe," rescued from Poland by an American visa just six weeks before the Nazi invasion. According to his own analysis, his survival was a gift because he became a unique religious voice in an era in which religion was in grave danger The Hasidic Jewish world of Eastern Europe in which he was raised was far from the environment in which he wrote and taught in the United States. He came from a rebbe's family in Poland, from a Jewish civilization that was suddenly eradicated in the middle of his lifetime by the Germans, in whose universities he had studied, And, in whose language, he had written about Jewish religious thought. Despite the horrors he experienced-the murder of his mother, sisters, friends, and relatives, the destruction of the world which had nourished him-his life continued to reflect the holy dimension he was able to evoke in his own original and unique words.
Words, he often wrote, are themselves sacred, God's tool for creating the universe, and our tools for bringing holiness-or evil-into the world. He used to remind us that the Holocaust did not begin with the building of crematoria, and Hitler did not come to power with tanks and guns; it all began with uttering evil words, with defamation, with language and propaganda. He used to tell me when I was a child, "Words create worlds",
They must be used very carefully. Some words, once having been uttered, gain eternity and can never be withdrawn. The Book of Proverbs reminds us, he wrote, that death and life are in the power of the tongue.
MY FATHER was born in Warsaw on January 11, 1907, the youngest child of Moshe Mordechai and Reizel (Perlow) Heschel. His mother and father were each descended from distinguished Hasidic rebbes, a family of nobility in the Jewish world. Nearly all the great Hasidic leaders of Eastern Europe, those who inspired and led the pietistic revival that began in the eighteenth century, were among my father's ancestors. He cherished and revered them. I remember as a child how often he used to take small, fragile books from his shelf, Hasidic seforim, show them to me, read a little with me, and tell me with awe about the great-grandfathers who had written them. This is your inheritance, he would say. Far from feeling burdened by the greatness of his heritage, he felt gratitude, humbleness, and reverence for his ancestors. "I was very fortunate," he told an inter-viewer, "In having lived as a child and as a young boy in an environment where there were many people I could revere, people concerned with problems of inner life, of spirituality and integrity. People who have shown great compassion and understanding for other people."
As a small child he was accorded the princely honors given the families of Hasidic rebbes. Adults would rise when he entered the room, even when he was little, recognizing that he was a special person. He would be lifted onto a table to deliver drushas, learned discussions of Hebrew texts. He was considered an illui, a genius. His world was one of intense piety and religious observance. He felt grateful, as he described much later, that he grew up surrounded by people of spiritual nobility. As the baby of the family, he was loved and fussed over by his older sisters, Sarah, Devorah Miriam, Esther Sima, and Gittel, and his brother, Jacob. He was teased and coddled the way youngest children of large families are. He was only three years old, when his oldest sister, Sarah, married their first cousin, the Kapitshinitzer rebbe. He remembered being at the wedding, running around excitedly among the adults. Even as a small child he took his religious obligations very seriously. He seemed amused and embarrassed when he told me that when he was sent as a five-year-old on an errand to a female neighbor, he would ask that the object he was borrowing be placed on a table-according to ultra-Orthodox custom, a man should not give or receive from a woman's hand.
His was a large extended family. His mother was the twin sister of the Novominsker rebbe, Alter Israel Simon Perlow, who lived in Warsaw, and there were many cousins, nieces, and nephews. The family's first tragedy came in 1916. My father was nine years old, and his father died - during an influenza epidemic.
It was devastating for the family. Shortly before I turned nine, I developed a fear the same thing might happen to me. I asked him, over and over, how he could survive such a terrible thing. He used to say, (in a way that was so sad for me to hear), that he just wished he could talk to his father again, just once more, even for one hour.
As a teenager my father began publishing his first articles, short studies, in Hebrew, of talmudic literature, which appeared in a Warsaw rabbinical publication, Sha'are Torah, in 1922 and 1923. When he grew older, he began to read secular books in addition to his Talmud studies. He said his mother worried at not hearing him chant Gemara while he studied, (knowing that he was reading what he should not).Wwith the approval of his family, he finally decided to go to Vilna - to study at a Gymnasium. There he completed his examinations on June 24, 1927, at the Mathematical-Natural Science Gymnasium. He also became involved with a Yiddish poetry group,"Jung Vilna", and published, as his first book, a volume of Yiddish poems, Der Shem Hamefoyrosh: Mentsch, written during his years in Vilna and published in Warsaw in 1933, dedicated to his father's memory.' The poems were greeted warmly in the worlds of Yiddish and Hebrew belles lettres; they brought him to the attention of, among others, Chaim Nachman Bialik, who wrote to him from Israel with an enthusiastic letter of congratulations.
Among my father's childhood friends from Warsaw few survived. One who did was the Yiddish writer Yechiel Hoffer, who immigrated to Israel and wrote autobiographical novels in which my father appears as a young man. Another was Zalman Shazar, a Zionist, and Hebrew writer - who later became President of the state of Israel. They remained good friends throughout their lives; letters from Shazar to my father, written in Hebrew, address him, "To the friend of my soul, master of joy, son of holy people."
In 1970, on the occasion of President Shazar's eightieth birthday, my father wrote a tribute to him in Yiddish: "He is a Jew who lives with visions. He carries in himself a song that calls and awakens sleeping souls." My father also gave President Shazar a mezuzah that had once stood on the doorpost of the synagogue of the Baal Shem Tov, (the founder of Hasidism), in the little East European town of Mezibizh.
After Vilna, in 1927, my father went to study in Berlin, to participate in what he felt was the great center of European intellectual and cultural life. He enrolled at the Hochschule fur die Wissenschaft des Judentums
"A brokhe dem nosi" (Greetings to President Shazar on his eightieth birthday) in Die goldene Keyt, Tel Aviv, No. 68 0970), p. 26. Shazar sent a telegram to the Israel Bonds dinner honoring my father in December 1970: "To Abraham Joshua Heschel, my cherished friend" - "The descendant of so saintly a line, now brings to American Jewry sparks of holiness and true radiance."

DR. MARC EDMUND JONES – BIO
Marc Edmund Jones
October 1, 1888 - March 8, 1980
Marc Edmund Jones was an original - dropping out of high school to go into business. Years later he completed his formal education with a Ph.D. in philosophy from Columbia University. He participated in the creation of the movie industry by writing scenarios in the very early days and was instrumental in founding what later became the Screen Writer's Guild. A Presbyterian clergyman, he served in a parish for five years. He was a philosopher, author of the major work, "Occult Philosophy." Most people knew him as an astrologer.
Marc Jones began the study of astrology in 1913. In 1922, working with a psychic, Elsie Wheeler, he developed the symbols for each degree of the Zodiac, which have become known as the Sabian Symbols. In 1923 he worked out his Key Principles of Astrology for use with his regular classes. This base
was expanded in the following years. He developed 12 sets of lessons for his students, presenting in mimeographed form a comprehensive but condensed version of a variety of approaches to astrology.
Marc came out in the open with his ideas on reforming astrology while working on his Ph.D. in New York, . Some of the problems he saw in the way astrology was usually practiced included assigning rulership to planets, over personification of symbols, creation of "influences," unnecessary confusion over the distortion of houses, confusion between signs and houses, viewing the signs as quite set in nature, and taking the zodiac as a mystic conglomeration of heavenly influences upon man to which he must submit.
In his increasing efforts to correct such misunderstandings, Marc Jones traveled and lectured in many parts of the country. In these talks he did not refer to "benefics" and '`malefics" in the chart. He challenged the age-old notion that the power is in the stars, that the chart creates the destiny. He taught that astrology properly used helps clients see more clearly their own tendencies so they can decide for themselves what they want to do with those tendencies.
In New York, he produced the series of books which had been projected years earlier as the rigorous presentation of techniques worked out in the mimeographed lessons. His plan was reinforced both by the growing public interest in astrology, and by his position as occult book editor for the David McKay Book Company. Eleven astrological books were written and published over the years from 1941-1979. His last work, "The Counseling Manual in Astrology", had been written and most of the type set at the time of his death, and publication was completed posthumously.
In his later years, Marc Jones was widely recognized for his valuable contribution to astrology. He was customarily and affectionately referred to as the dean of American astrology.

- Katrina Raphaell
KATRINA RAPHAELL – BIO
Katrina Raphaell has extensively worked with New Age Healing Arts for over 16 years. Her professional experience includes nursing, teaching and practicing massage therapies, and other related healing modalities. She was the director of Health Care for a natural drug and alcohol rehabilitation center. While there, she had the opportunity to apply her knowledge of nutrition, herbology, hydrotherapy, yoga, meditation technologies, kinesiology, flower essences, homeopathy and various forms of natural healing methods.
Through her studies and healing work, Katrina became increasingly aware of the mental and emotional imbalances associated with physical dis-ease. As the world of crystals opened up to her, Katrina was guided to use the energies of light and color to balance the more subtle aspects of our being-emotional, mental, subcon-scious and spiritual. Applying the information received in her personal meditations, she experienced first hand information, about how to utilize the light forces within the mineral kingdom to benefit oneself and others.
To bring this information to a wider audience, Katrina authored Crystal Enlightenment in 1985, which was the result of her personal study, work with clients and research. The material contained in her books, is part of a sacred knowledge, on how to use crystals and stones for healing and the expansion of consciousness. In order to facilitate the art of Crystal Healing, Ms. Raphaell opened the Crystal Academy of Advanced Healing Arts in Taos, New Mexico. Making available intensive seminars, and courses for in depth studies. The Crystal Academy also encourages further gathering of information and research into the potential, and as yet undiscovered, qualities of crystals. Nationally, Katrina is a popular lecturer, and with translations of her books in other languages, is invited to participate internationally in workshops and conferences.

Rudhyar's expansive vision finds its ideal complement in Leyla Rael's straightforward approach and clear applications. Their approach provides the foundation for a meaning - revealing chart interpretation and inspiring life interpretation. DANE RUDHYAR – AN ASTROLOGICAL TRIPTYCH
In An Astrological Triptych, Rudhyar extracts from traditional Astrology a wealth of psychological and spiritual meaning. New interpretations of the zodiacal signs, houses, and planets are presented, shedding light on the three basic phases of the great ritual which constitutes the spiritual unfoldment of the human being.
Gifts Of the Spirit- The Illumined Road-The Way Through
"To become whole by assimilating that which completes our particular being to realize that individual existence is a process of repeated emergence out of a number of typical conditions which test the individual's strength, resilience and faith, and having realized this, to be victorious over the negative trend which is met at every step of the way."
-RUDHYAR
An Astrological Triptych is a book to read and reread! Each chapter stands by itself yet is a part in a vast symphony of revealed values and inspired imagery.
"Your new book, Astrological Triptych, means for me all psychosynthesis-in another language-in its widest and highest spiritual sense." -Roberto Assagioli

DANE RUDHYAR – ASTROLOGICAL INSIGHTS
Astrological Insights provides a penetrating, sensitive, poetic, and visual insight into the twelve qualities required for the spiritual life, for astrologers and non-astrologers alike.
Using the Astrological signs and houses, Rudhyar builds a framework for impregnating the seeker with an awareness of how to use basic life challenges, as a process through which an individual human being evolves. Twelve exquisite artistic renderings evoke the archetypal, intuitive level of each sign.
"Meditation on power. The human earth, level after level rises to Himalayan intensity. A divine Presence overshadows the meditator, as the garnet sun sinks into the abyss. It merges with the guest. It is yogic power taking form as the embodied ideal, the vision made substance. The "Universal" acquires "form and name" according to the longings of particular beings seeking to insure the permanency of ideals." -RUDHYAR

DANE RUDHYAR -THE GALACTIC DIMENSION OF ASTROLOGY
Dane Rudhyar - "The Galactic Dimension of Astrology -The Sun Is Also a Star"
In this book, Rudhyar expands traditional Astrological philosophy by introducing a galactic view of the solar system.
"When the Sun is seen as the star it fundamentally is, a galactic frame of reference takes form in the consciousness of man, and it brings to all patterns and events of our traditional solar system a potentially new meaning. The entire solar system is seen in a new light, the light of the relationship it has to the Galaxy." -RUDHYAR
"A deepened understanding of Uranus, Neptune and Pluto can guide us towards experiencing the galactic level of consciousness. The "challenge of galacticity" to humanistic astrology releases new perspectives when applied to individual horoscopes. His new interpretations of the transsaturnian planets provide a vehicle to transform how we use Astrology in our daily lives, and for the evolving planet we live on. I am impressed by the thought that of all the books I have read on Astrology, Rudhyar's works eclipse all others. "He has the very special gift of always keeping before our minds the whole". With "His ability to dissect and analyze" and "to show the relation between the parts and finally to relate the parts to the whole, is a most exceptional one".
Reading Rudhyar,
"I am forever impressed by his ability to put in words - what is even difficult to express or understand when conceived in more symbolic, cryptic forms of communication. "
"He is forever awakening in us the relatedness of all things, their profound spiritual significance. This is the sense of the whole which, when relayed to us by an Astrologer, lifts Astrology to its proper place and puts us in our proper place with respect to its aim and purpose." -Henry Miller
"Rudhyar revolutionized twentieth-century astrology, using the symbolic language of the stars and planets to explore the nature of spiritual destiny". "His is an astrology concerned less with measurement than with meaning". It has "the sense of purpose and connectedness to the universe which he thought was essential to a harmonious and positive life."

DANE RUDHYAR – THE ASTROLOGY OF PERSONALITY
The Astrology of Personality is a modern classic. It is as potent today as when first written in 1936.
Dane Rudhyar integrates modern concepts of psychology, with elements of both Western and Oriental philosophies.
He succeeds in presenting Astrology as a symbolic language by reformulating its basic concepts and focusing on viewing the chart as a whole.
Dane Rudhyar's Classic with a Foreword by Charles Harvey
"Astrology has been debased as fortunetelling and usually deals only with concrete events" "Events in themselves are not important. What matters is the significance we bestow upon them. It is only by giving to events the meaning centered in our own souls, that we make them real. There is no reality except that which we create-the very activity of continuous living. Thus events do not happen, we happen to them."

THE PLANETARIZATION OF CONSCIOUSNESS DANE RUDHYAR
The Planetarization of Consciousness - Dane Rudhyar is Rudhyar's major philosophical and psychological work, the concentrated outcome of a lifetime concerned with the most basic problems of human existence and the meaning of radical social-cultural crisis mankind is experiencing.
Rudhyar has been for years an apostle of world integration based on the interpretation of Eastern and Western concepts and attitudes to life. He sees emerging a global society, and through the worldwide interaction of all cultures, a new type of "planetary" consciousness which for the first time will reveal in its fullness the potential of man.
"The holistic world-view which I present here is meant to be an incentive to think greater thoughts, to feel deeper, more inclusive feelings, and to act as "agents" for the Power that structures human evolution-however we wish to image this power." -RUDHYAR
The Planetarization is essentially an act of faith in Man. Man as a microcosm of the universe. Man as a reality that transcends the physical organism, all localisms and nationalisms, and in whom spirit and matter can unite in a "Divine Marriage" productive of ever new and greater creative tomorrows.
"I am particularly pleased because Rudhyar's whole trend of thought is in the spirit of psychosynthesis. From different starting points and using a different terminology he arrives at the same basic conclusion on important issues such as: harmonizing the opposites in individuals and in society; the central importance of purpose; the need of a new humanistic psychology." -Roberto Assagioli

ABOUT DANE RUDHYAR
DANE RUDHYAR was born in Paris, France, on March 23, 1895. Rudhyar intuitively realized, quite early in his life, two things which have deeply influenced his entire life and work: (1) Time is cyclic, and the Law of cycles describes all civilizations as well as all existence; (2) Western Civilization is now in what could be symbolically called the autumn phase of its period of existence. As these realizations developed into a personal commitment to the future which he envisioned, Rudhyar felt the urge to divorce himself from Europe and to seek a "New World" -a land into which he could sow himself as a seed, carrying within his being the legacy of whatever was viable and constructive in the European past. he came to America in the late fall of 1916, leaving behind his native land, arid ancestral French culture, as well as his family name, Chenneviere.
His change of name was symbolic of a total dedication to his ideal: the transformation of our civilization, a revaluation of all values: He became known as Rudhyar; a name derived from the Sanskrit root Rudra implying dynamic action and the electrical power released during storms. The god Rudra in the Vedas is the Destroyer and Regenerator, the transforming energy, breaker of old molds and the power of will or vital force.
This sense of destiny released through Rudhyar tremendous energy which he channeled into the development of his philosophical ideas; through Music and the use of tone; through Painting as the Art of Gestures; through Astrology as a symbolic language with the potential to bring individuals in tune with cosmic cycles. Throughout his life and his use of many different forms of expression, his purpose became clearly focused and dynamic. He calls forth the need for individuals with holistic vision and a "transpersonal" approach to life to serve as the foundation of a global society.
